BITMAIN's Gaio Doria on Quality by Design

BITMAIN's senior sales manager on an R&D-heavy workforce, its repair and spare parts network, and the S21 Hydro, at Mining Disrupt Miami 2024.

What is the secret of BITMAIN? Gaio Doria, a Senior Sales Manager at BITMAIN based in Raleigh, North Carolina, put that question to himself on stage at Mining Disrupt Miami 2024, held June 24 to 26, 2024. His answer came in two parts.

The first was a philosophy he called quality by design, applied from design and prototypes through manufacturing and shipping. Doria backed it with a staffing figure: half of BITMAIN's employees work in research and development, and 70% of them hold master's or doctoral degrees. In his words, "It's quality by design."

The second part was the customer. "The second, which I think is as important as the first, is customer success is our success," he said. He described repair centers around the world with round-the-clock response, national spare parts warehouses with replacements ready to ship, and a group of companies around BITMAIN: a mining pool, BitFuFu for cloud mining, and Antalpha, which he called the company's venture capital arm, helping clients raise capital or upgrade their fleets. He said BITMAIN builds for very hot and very cold weather, and for different cooling methods.

Doria traced the company back to 2013 and the Antminer S1, its first ASIC miner. By 2017, he said, BITMAIN had secured its leadership position, and he called it the largest manufacturer in the space. By his count, the air-cooled line has improved energy efficiency by more than 130 times over the company's history, and hashrate by more than 1,300 times.

For buyers new to mining, his advice was short. Choosing a machine comes down to hashrate against energy efficiency. Hashrate should be as high as possible, and joules per terahash as low as possible. He pointed to an earlier session about using mining heat to pasteurize beer as a way of putting the cost side to work.

He closed with the hardware. The Antminer S21 Hydro is rated at 473 terahash at 12 joules per terahash. The S21 XP air-cooled model is rated at 270 terahash at 13.5 joules per terahash. A new container, the Antspace HW5, holds up to 160 immersion-cooled miners. Those are BITMAIN's own figures, given from the stage.

When Doria spoke, Bitcoin traded at $61,272. Today it is $81,466.

He finished by inviting the room to booth 99, for questions, orders or feedback.
